Media representative bodies have come out to castigate businessman Wicknell Chivayo who is being accused of harassing a female journalist who was pursuing a story.

Reports show that the journalist has since filed a police report against the alleged uncomfortable moves by the businessman.

Zimbabwe Union of Journalists (ZUJ) Secretary General Perfect Hlongwane says Chivayo’s actions are a danger to society.

“ZUJ is quite [disturbed] by recent threats and intimidation and cyber attacks on journalist Rutendo Maraire by Wicknell Chivayo.

“We want to unequivocally express complete displeasure at such criminal acts meant to calm and gag journalists from freely executing their role of informing the nation and holding authorities to account who think that they are numerous ways that these issues can be resolved instead of threatening the journalists,”Hlongwane said.

Young Journalists Association (YOJA) spokesperson Lovejoy Mtongwiza said :”As YOJA we are deeply concerned by the report that businessman and socialite Wicknell Chivayo threatened young journalist Rutendo Maraire who attempted to get a comment for the article she was working on.

“The threats to journalists are unacceptable.”
