Cabinet has approved a memorandum on the Constitutional Amendment Bill of 2026, which seeks to extend presidential terms to seven years from the current five years, Business Times can report.
Speaking at a first Post-Cabinet media briefing in Harare on Tuesday, Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister, Dr Jenfan Muswere said the Bill also provides for the repealing of Section 92 of the Constitution to allow the President to be elected by a joint sitting of Parliament.
He said the proposed amendments are meant to ensure policy continuity, allow for the completion of several ongoing national projects and avoid election-related disruptions.
“The memorandum proposes a series of legal reforms to strengthen constitutional Governance, clarify institutional roles, promote social-economic and political stability and also to enhance the efficiency of State architecture,” Dr Muswere said.
