Ziyambi rubbishes BBI “2030” document

Justice Minister Ziyambi Ziyambi has ripped into a leaked document claiming Zanu PF plans to extend President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s rule, calling it “fake,” “spurious,” and “a total waste of time.”
The document, titled Breaking Barriers Initiative (BBI), went viral on social media this week, claiming to outline a secret plan to suspend elections and amend the Constitution to keep Mnangagwa in power beyond his current term.
Ziyambi, who is the Zanu PF Secretary for Legal Affairs and whose office is tasked with ensuring the implementation of the party’s Resolution Number 1 to have President Mnangagwa extend his term of office to 2030 to allow him to continue with the developmental trajectory said the so-called initiative “bears no named author” and “does not reflect the official position of either Zanu PF or the Government of Zimbabwe.”
“My office cannot verify the authenticity of the circulating document, which may, in all likelihood, be spurious, fabricated or manipulated, particularly in light of the dubious source of its disclosure,” he said.
The minister confirmed that while legal experts and scholars had submitted ideas on possible constitutional changes since late 2024, no official decision had been made.
“Once the relevant authorities decide on the precise amendments and the process for enacting them, the public will be informed transparently,” Ziyambi said.
“Until then, any obsession with a document reportedly leaked from dubious sources is a total waste of time and a disservice to the national interest.”
The Breaking Barriers Initiative has been linked to exiled former minister Jonathan Moyo, with claims that it proposes extending Mnangagwa’s term without a referendum.
Ziyambi’s fiery response is the government’s first direct rebuttal to the controversy, which has fuelled a storm of speculation and exposed growing tension over succession inside the ruling party.
